Perhaps it’s because, before last season, Freeman had two years of decreased production as the immediate follow-up to a 2013 campaign in which he finished fifth in the MVP voting after clubbing 23 homers, 109 RBIs and carrying a .396 on-base percentage. A down season in 2014 was followed by an injury-riddled 2015 in which Freeman played in just 118 games. And just like that, baseball minds outside Atlanta drifted away from thoughts of Freeman.
Or perhaps Freeman’s lower profile is because the Braves, while still with a large fan base, are no longer the type of national brand they were in the days of Superstation WTBS, when their games went nationwide every night and helped players get name recognition among both casual baseball fans and those who rooted for other teams.

Or maybe we can blame it on the Braves having not won consistently in recent years, with three straight sub-.500 seasons and two seasons of 90-plus losses, the logic being that MVPs shouldn’t come from losing teams. After all, Chipper Jones won his MVP in 1999 in the middle of the Braves’ run of 14 straight division titles, and Dale Murphy won his two MVP awards in 1982 and 1983 as the Braves won a division title and stayed in the race for another — both in the heart of the Superstation era.
Nationals stars Anthony Rendon and Ryan Zimmerman continued their hot hitting in a 4-2 win over the Phillies. Rendon, who had a game for the ages last weekend, went 3 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs and a walk. Zimmerman, who has quietly been the best hitter in MLB so far this season, went 3 for 5 with a solo home run, and is now batting .433 this year.
Limited Kids Joe Colborne Jersey Blue Jays designated hitter Kendrys Morales went 3 for 5 with three runs scored, two home runs and five RBIs in an 8-4 win over the Rays. Toronto scored five runs in the eighth inning to pull off the come-from-behind victory.
The Mets won their weekend series vs. the Nationals, but they’ve already lost the battle for New York.

The Mets took the first two games of their set in Washington before being shellacked in the final game Sunday 23-5. Despite it being just one loss, the Nats broke the Mets’ backs early. They scored five runs in the bottom of the first off now-injured New York ace Noah Syndergaard.
Now the Mets sit alongside the Braves in last place in the NL East, behind even the Phillies and the Marlins.
The Mets’ season isn’t over. It’s still early. They did just bring the fight to division-favorite Washington for two games on the road. They’re 10-14, not 3-21.
But . . . how ’bout those Yankees?
The Mets went to the World Series in 2015 on the strength of a run that not many saw coming. For one postseason in New York, it wasn’t about the high-priced Yankees vs. the Mets. It was only about the boys from Flushing.
The Mets’ fan base split after that World Series run. The opinions differed like the baseball equivalent of crunchy vs. creamy peanut butter, Diamond Dave vs. Sammy Hagar, Marvel Comics or DC Comics. Some fans weren’t satisfied with just getting to the dance and wanted to win then. Others just enjoyed the team being in the Series for the first time in 15 years. It was the franchise’s time to shine.
Womens Will Clarke Jersey Doubt it. The three voters who didn’t vote for Griffey, for example, never admitted it. My pure speculation: Jones would have gotten maybe 90 to 92 percent of the vote if he was part of the class of 2017. Instead …
Zay Jones is moving from East Carolina to the NFL, but he’ll have some continuity.
The Bills moved up to draft the ECU receiver Friday with the 37th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Jones will reunite with new Bills receivers coach Phil McGeoghan, who held the same position at East Carolina.
Jones probably has the best hands in this year’s draft class and is certainly the most accomplished receiver.
The Bills moved up seven spots from 44 to 37 and sent the 91st overall pick in the third round to the Rams. The Bills also got a fourth-round pick (149th overall) from the Rams.
Jones, the son of former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Robert Jones, set the NCAA single-season record last season with 158 receptions for 1,746 yards and eight touchdowns.
Of the 158 catches Jones had last year, 91 of them were for first downs. He is the NCAA’s all-time leading receiver at the FBS level with 399 receptions for 4,279 yards and 23 touchdowns. He had a great week at the Senior Bowl in January. Senior Bowl director Phil Savage told Omnisport Jones was “clearly the best receiver” in Mobile.
In addition to his excellent hands, the 6-2, 202-pound Jones showed off his athleticism and surprising speed at the combine with a 4.45-second 40-yard dash. He has explosive acceleration off the line and is a smooth and precise route runner to go with reliable hands. Jones has just about every tangible and intangible quality NFL coaches love.
“He’s a kid who I like. He has a great work ethic,” longtime NFL receivers coach Jerry Sullivan told Omnisport. “He has a lot of upside. Do I think he’ll be an elite guy? I don’t know that, but I think he’ll make somebody’s team and play in the league for a while.
“I like Zay. I think he has a chance to be a good player.”

Gavvy Cravath, having to stay a few extra seasons in the minors because of draft rules: Deadball Era slugger Gavvy Cravath didn’t really get going in the majors until he was 31, smacking 118 home runs thereafter. Part of what held him back: After brief stints with three American League teams in 1908 and 1909, he was farmed out to the Minneapolis Millers of the American Association. Though he quickly became a star for Minneapolis, it took three seasons and, according to his SABR biography, a clerical error, for Cravath to get another shot in the majors.
Two of the Yankees’ runs were aided by errors, including the go-ahead run in the 18th. Contreras threw away a leadoff bunt single by Aaron Hicks, putting Hicks on second base. After a Ronald Torreyes sacrifice bunt, Starlin Castro hit a grounder to Russell’s left, but Russell’s off-balance throw from the edge of the infield grass was wide and Hicks scored easily from third to give New York the lead.
Paul Kruger Jersey Way back in the seventh inning, the Yankees took a 2-1 lead when Bryant threw away Castro’s grounder and center fielder Jon Jay played a long fly by Aaron Judge into an RBI triple. That was the 17th unearned run allowed by the Cubs in 31 games, fourth-most in the NL. Last year, they allowed 45 unearned runs total.
Friedrich was part of the four-man rotation in its early stages, though he pitched on three days’ rest only three times in seven starts. In fact, the four-man rotation wasn’t strictly followed; Rox pitchers started just 20 times on three days’ rest in 55 games to which it applied. Colorado went to a straight five-man rotation after Chacin returned from the disabled list on Aug. 21. Chacin never went on three days’ rest at all.
MLB is investigating the Dodgers based on claims that Nick Francona was wrongfully terminated due to his war veteran status, Yahoo Sports reported, citing unidentified sources.
Limited Mens Jacquies Smith Jersey Francona, the son of Indians manager Terry Francona, claimed in a letter to MLB that Los Angeles started easing him out of his position as an assistant director of the Dodgers’ developmental league last year after he decided to go in for an appointment at Home Base, which helps war veterans treat the psychological effects combat leaves.
Kennedy said the fan who came forward was in a conversation with another fan who used derogatory and unacceptable language.
I want to thank the fan who raised this issue, did exactly what we asked fans to do as soon as they heard inappropriate and offensive language, Kennedy said. Hopefully this is a step forward and in a crazy way maybe something positive happened from all this.
The Red Sox and Boston fans in general have been adamant racial heckling does not accurately represent the way their fans conduct themselves, but an outpouring of African-American MLB players have come forward since the Jones incident to reveal they’ve had similar experiences when playing at Fenway Park.
The Orioles-Red Sox series has gone on to produce numerous fireworks on the field with pitchers and hitters getting ejected for various reasons.
Michael Jordan Womens Jersey Despite the hard stance on the lifetime ban, Kennedy acknowledged it will be hard to enforce the ban at Fenway given all the entrances, but security will do the best it can.
There is no place for racial epithets at Fenway Park, in baseball, or in our society, the team said in the statement.
The Orioles repaid Mark Trumbo for his career year with a three-year contract worth $37.5 million, according to MLB Insider Jon Heyman.
Trumbo slashed .256/.316/.533 with 47 home runs and 108 RBIs during his first season at generous Camden Yards.
Mens Darrius Heyward-Bey Jersey Originally, Trumbo was seeking a contract upwards of $80 million, but he ran out of destinations and had to take the best offer on the table. In the end, the deal should work wonders for both parties.
Trumbo joins Adam Jones, Manny Machado and Chris Davis to create one of the most explosive lineups in MLB.
All they need now is a deeper, more reliable rotation and a postseason run could be a possibility.
But regardless of their merits as a baseball team heading into 1982, the Braves were set to be the stars of this documentary that would aim to paint the picture of big-league life.
Hanson saw the potential for something special, as full access would, literally, open doors. His enthusiasm only grew when he learned Torre had joined the team.
Talk about a gift, Hanson said. When Joe Torre was hired, I knew we were in business because Joe was such a great media type of a person. He was known for his great interviews and how accessible he was to the press. And I knew we’d have a willing audience in him.
Torre showed enthusiasm from the beginning.
Mens Bryan Anger Jersey It wasn’t mandated to me that we were going to do this. They asked me and I volunteered, Torre said. It was my first year with the Braves, so I was excited to get that opportunity.
Elite Wilt Chamberlain Jersey The Browns made all the right moves in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft on Thursday.
Elite John Miller Jersey That’s right. Not a joke. We’re serious.
Cleveland stuck with Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett with the No. 1 pick to get all the no matter what references from Draft Day out of the way. That’s the biggest victory of the night.
It’s not surprising, with shrewd John Elway running things, that the Broncos waited to go more understated in improving their running back situation — especially given how they’ve stayed the course at quarterback.
Charles’ versatility and leadership are bonus assets that made him attractive as an older back. It also doesn’t hurt that signing with the Broncos gives him a chance to run hard against the Chiefs a couple times in the loaded AFC West.
Things were looking bleak for Charles, but he got a perfect ending; a chance to continue his career with a contender.
Like Prescott (6-2, 226) at Mississippi State, Dobbs (6-3, 216) starred with the Volunteers because of his arm, toughness and athleticism. He also needs to improve in the same areas Prescott did when he entered the league a year ago to be successful— decision-making and accuracy.
Dobbs is also smart and experienced enough to be a fast learner. He comes in with the backyard playmaking and physical mobility that Big Ben has exhibited in Pittsburgh throughout his career. Outside of Clemson’s Deshaun Watson, who went No. 12 overall to the Texans in the first round, Dobbs was best the Steelers-styled quarterback prospect in this class.
Pegula: No, absolutely not. No. Nope. Nope. And, trust me, you know, Doug’s a good communicator. He’s going to land somewhere and he’s very personable.
You talked about the future and you want to emphasize the future. In the future, why should people feel confident that you’re getting things right now? What should give people confidence?
Pegula: Well, first off, I own the team and they have to believe in us as owners, just like we have to try to believe in our players when we put them on the field. We’re going to try to make the best decision we can in the future and we’ve made big decisions all our lives.
Terry, what are the certain aspects that you alluded to that you believe that you need to get better at in the future within the general manager position?
Pegula: I need to keep that private. I don’t want to discuss that publicly.
When it came to the Sabres, you talked about structure and discipline and character. Could you say the same thing about things that are lacking in this organization and what you think might have been lacking here?
Michael Oher has been booked and released from a Nashville jail on a misdemeanor assault charge, The Tennessean reported Tuesday.
The Panthers offensive lineman, whose life story was depicted in the book and Oscar-winning movie “The Blind Side,” was accused of knocking an Uber driver to the ground last month.
According to Nashville police, the driver and Oher got into an argument about the Uber fare, and Oher pushed and kicked the man after the driver put his hand in Oher’s face.
After a slew of Sunday games left NBA fans yearning for more, Monday’s trio of playoff matchups is enough to keep you held over for a tough start to the work week.
Kicking off the week are the No. 3 Toronto Raptors and No. 6 Milwaukee Bucks, who find themselves in precarious positions after splitting the first four games at one apiece on each other’s home floors. The Bucks have given the Raptors more than they bargained for, and they have the best player in the series in Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the Raptors are a battle-tested squad in win-now mode. Game 5 is in Toronto, and the Raps will look to hold down the fort in the north.
I live in a house with a whole bunch of other guys from the team, Hansen tells SB Nation. I think we were sitting down and watching someone play Texas. I think it was like an older game, like a throwback game. I think it was probably Oklahoma or something like that, and we saw someone, after they scored or after they won, throw the Horns Down. I just thought, you know, it’d be cool and it’d be funny for me to do that, and it’d sort of get the crowd into the game. It worked out in my favor.
Thank god we won the game, because if we didn’t, I probably wouldn’t have heard the end of that.
Game Mens Jeremy Maclin Jersey Hansen declared for the NFL draft after the season, his junior year by eligibility. He landed with the Jets in the fourth round, 141st overall.
Game Mens Lavelle Hawkins Jersey It’s always been a slow reaction to what the college guys were doing, Mumme — whose associate, Mike Leach, mentored TTU coach and former Patriots backup Kliff Kingsbury — recently told SB Nation. For instance, back in the ‘60s, the NFL only had two coverages. They just played man, or they played cover 3. And then they hired a bunch of college coaches to come in and coach secondaries, and they started playing cover 2 and two deep safeties instead of one deep safety all the time.
Saturday brings us four matchups for our eight-game weekend, featuring the Bucks and the Raptors as our most interesting series. Two more series that resume play on Saturday are 2-0, meaning we can get closer to the Warriors sweeping the Trail Blazers and possibly even the Wizards doing the same to Atlanta.

With the Celtics down to the Chicago Bulls 2-0 in their first-round playoff series, that rhetoric may have changed.
The Celtics also have a bevy of young players and draft picks, including swap rights with Brooklyn, who own the best odds at the No. 1 overall pick.
Anthony has two more years on his contract worth $53 million. The soon-to-be 33-year-old forward averaged 22.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, shooting 43 percent from the field for the Knicks, who missed the playoffs for the fourth straight season.
He has a 15 percent trade kicker that increases the sum of his deal to around $60 million, and he holds no-trade clause and must sign off on any deal before his trade.
